EcoDataCenter Sustainability Report 2024

A clear goal for our energy use

Our industry is energy intensive. So we have an obligation to use energy responsibly.

That responsibility is primarily a question of which type of energy we purchase and use in our operations. We have set a target to have more than 99 % renewable energy by 2028.

The electricity we use is 100 % renewable. A large share, 75%, comes from hydro power plants, and around 25 % is produced by windmills.

We reuse as much heat from operations as possible. And we are switching fuels in our backup generators to decarbonize even more of our energy use.

Over 99% renewable

When bundled together, the amount of all energy types we use that are renewable comes in at 99,3 % for 2024.

Being ahead of our own goal means we will find new areas to improve. It can span from more efficient designs to reducing the energy consumption from cooling the servers.

It can also be about helping to improve the local or regional grid and ensuring the right infrastructure is in place to keep expanding.

Robust redundancy

Data center availability is at the core of our customer commitment. This is why redundancy, proper care, and maintenance of our technical installations are essential.

We always have two redundant feeds of electricity to our data centers and onsite backup power generation. We also ensure a power supply in case of a blackout.

To do this, we have backup power from UPS units with batteries, which immediately take over if both redundant grid supplies are simultaneously unavailable. When that happens, we then start our onsite power generators and keep them running until the grid supply is available again. Thankfully, we rarely use these back-up systems since the Swedish power grid is highly reliable.
