Cutting emissions with clean fuels

EcoDataCenter Sustainability Report 2024

Over 99 % renewable energy

We have set out a target to use more than 99 % renewable energy by 2028. As part of that goal, we decided in 2023 to ditch diesel in our backup generators. We were eager to deliver.

In 2024, the share of renewable fuel (HVO) was 65 % of the total fuel use for the backup generators. Switching to HVO meant the operational CO2e emissions dropped by 39 % in absolute terms.

We achieved this absolute decrease in emissions while consuming more fuel, stemming from our growth and expansion.

Lowering our CUE significantly

The switch to HVO has a profound effect on the environmental impact of our data centers. As an example, the Carbon Usage Effectiveness metric dropped significantly in 2024 compared to the year before.

That metric is our main indicator for how much emissions a data center produces when the IT equipment inside is up and running. We have a target to reduce the CUE metric by 70 % between our base year 2022 and the year 2028.

Ditching diesel means we have come more than halfway towards the target of lowering the CUE. For the last two years, our CUE reduction sums up to 45 %. With the transition to HVO, our nearly fossil free data centers will avoid 2500 tons CO2e.

Efficiency at the core

Data centers require a lot of energy to run and cool our customers’ servers. The supply and availability of power are at the heart of our business.

That is why the growth of the company is heavily connected with an increased energy usage to safely operate customer equipment.

Our top priority is to ensure a renewable energy transition and energy-efficient operations.

Our transition to more and more HVO for powering our backup systems put us above the target level of 99 % renewable energy already in 2024.
